Rhetorical Synthesis from Notes

The SAT's Signature Question Type

Rhetorical synthesis questions are unique to the digital SAT. They present a set of bullet-point notes and ask you to combine them into a sentence that achieves a specific goal. These appear 2–4 times per R&W module.

The Format

You'll see something like:

While researching a topic, a student has taken these notes:

• The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) launched in December 2021.
• It orbits the Sun at a distance of about 1 million miles from Earth.
• JWST can detect infrared light from the earliest galaxies formed after the Big Bang.
• The Hubble Space Telescope, launched in 1990, primarily detects visible and ultraviolet light.

The student wants to emphasize a difference between the two telescopes. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

Strategy: Match the Goal

The key is the stated goal. Different goals require different information:

Goal	What to Include
"Emphasize a difference"	Information from BOTH items that contrasts them
"Introduce [topic] to an unfamiliar audience"	Basic identifying information, not technical details
"Emphasize [specific aspect]"	Only the notes relevant to that aspect
"Support [a claim]"	Only the notes that serve as evidence for the claim

Common Mistakes

1. Including irrelevant notes: If the goal is to compare telescopes, the launch date of JWST alone isn't relevant unless compared to Hubble's
2. Missing the goal: A sentence that accurately combines notes but doesn't achieve the stated purpose is wrong
3. Grammatical errors: The correct answer must be a well-formed sentence — not a run-on, fragment, or awkward construction

Worked Example

Goal: Emphasize a difference between the two telescopes.

• Wrong: "The James Webb Space Telescope launched in December 2021 and orbits the Sun about 1 million miles from Earth." (Only about JWST, no comparison.)
• Wrong: "The Hubble Space Telescope was launched in 1990, and the James Webb Space Telescope was launched in 2021." (Compares dates, but the notes emphasize the difference in what they detect.)
• Right: "While the Hubble Space Telescope primarily detects visible and ultraviolet light, the James Webb Space Telescope can detect infrared light from the earliest galaxies." (Contrasts the two telescopes' capabilities.)
