In a 2022 study published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, researchers discovered that octopuses throw debris at one another—the first documented case of targeted throwing in any invertebrate species. [1] Using underwater cameras positioned near an octopus den site in Jervis Bay, Australia, the team captured over 100 instances of octopuses gathering shells, silt, or algae with their arms and propelling the material through the water by directing jets from their siphon. [2] Notably, throws directed at other octopuses were significantly more forceful than those used to discard unwanted food or clear den space, suggesting intentionality rather than incidental displacement. The study raises provocative questions about the cognitive complexity of cephalopods and whether such behavior constitutes a rudimentary form of social communication.
