Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about ACT scoring.

How is the ACT scored?+
Each section (English, Math, Reading, Science) is scored on a 1–36 scale. Your composite score is the average of all 4 section scores, rounded to the nearest whole number. The total composite range is 1–36.
What is a good ACT score?+
The national average is approximately 20.6. A score of 25 or higher puts you above 77% of test takers. A 30+ is in the top 6%, and a 34+ places you in the top 1% — competitive for the most selective universities.
How many questions are on the ACT?+
English: 75 questions in 45 minutes. Math: 60 questions in 60 minutes. Reading: 40 questions in 35 minutes. Science: 40 questions in 35 minutes (optional starting 2025–2026). Total: 215 questions in 2 hours 55 minutes.
Is Science still required on the ACT?+
Starting with the 2025–2026 Enhanced ACT, the Science section is optional. Your composite can be calculated from 3 or 4 sections. If you take Science, it’s averaged in. If not, the composite is the average of English, Math, and Reading.
What’s the difference between raw and scaled scores?+
Your raw score is the number of questions you answered correctly — there is no penalty for guessing on the ACT. Your scaled score is the converted 1–36 score for each section, using score conversion tables that adjust for test difficulty across different test dates.
