Section-Adaptive Testing

Each measure has two sections. Your performance on Section 1 determines whether Section 2 is easier, medium, or harder. Scoring well on Section 1 unlocks harder questions in Section 2, giving you access to the highest score ranges. The total test takes ~118 minutes and is scored 260–340 composite (Verbal + Quantitative).

How is the GRE scored?+
The GRE is scored on a 260–340 composite scale. Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are each scored 130–170 in 1-point increments. Analytical Writing is scored separately on a 0–6 scale in half-point increments. Your composite score is the sum of your Verbal and Quantitative scores.
What is section-adaptive testing on the GRE?+
The GRE uses section-adaptive testing. Each measure (Verbal and Quantitative) has two sections. Your performance on Section 1 determines whether Section 2 is easier, medium, or harder. Performing well on Section 1 unlocks harder questions in Section 2, which gives you access to higher scores. CramClub simulates this exact format.

The shorter GRE (September 2023+) takes about 1 hour and 58 minutes of testing time. Analytical Writing is 30 minutes, Verbal Reasoning is 41 minutes (two sections of 18 and 23 minutes), and Quantitative Reasoning is 47 minutes (two sections of 21 and 26 minutes).
What question types are on the GRE?+
Verbal Reasoning includes Text Completion (1-, 2-, and 3-blank), Sentence Equivalence (select 2 of 6 choices), and Reading Comprehension (single-answer, multi-answer, and select-in-passage). Quantitative Reasoning includes Quantitative Comparison, Multiple Choice (single and multi-select), Numeric Entry, and Data Interpretation sets.
