The deadliest is extreme scope, because its skeleton is genuinely supported — the passage really did discuss the topic — and only its final degree is wrong. A passage observing that a policy "frequently reduced" delays does not imply the policy "eliminated" delays; a passage noting that "many" scholars revised a view does not imply a "consensus." Read the qualifier as carefully as the claim.
Untrained test-takers treat implies and suggests as invitations to speculate. They are the reverse: an invitation to be conservative. Consider a passage stating, "Unlike her contemporaries, who published constantly, the essayist released only three slim volumes in forty years, each revised obsessively." What must follow? That she published far less frequently than her contemporaries; that revision mattered greatly to her. What is merely a tempting guess? GRE authors are careful hedgers. They write "suggests," "may indicate," "in at least some cases," "the evidence is consistent with." A correct inference inherits that hedging. If the passage says a finding "is consistent with" a hypothesis, the credited answer will not say the finding "confirms" or "establishes" the hypothesis — being consistent with a claim is a far weaker relationship than proving it. Matching the passage's level of certainty is often the entire question.
Dense GRE passages stack voices — the author, an older orthodoxy, a rival camp, a specific researcher. "The author suggests that critics of the theory…" asks what the author would say about the critics, not what the critics themselves believe. Before you match, pin down whose belief the stem targets, because the most elegant trap simply reassigns a supported idea to the wrong speaker.
Every inference question rewards the same restraint: anchor to the language, state the smallest safe consequence, negation-test the survivors, and eliminate anything inflated by an over-reach word or a borrowed certainty. The GRE is not testing whether you can think of something true; it is testing whether you can refuse everything the passage does not compel. Stay inside the text, keep the answer exactly as large as the evidence, and the seductive over-reaches lose their pull.

Run the negation test: if you can imagine the whole passage being true while the choice is false, it is a guess, not an inference. Demand a line you can point to that forces the choice to be true.
Upgrading the passage’s certainty — reading "is consistent with" or "suggests" as "proves" or "establishes."
Match the author’s level of confidence exactly. If the passage hedges with "may," "some," or "in several cases," the credited answer will hedge too; a more certain choice over-reaches.
Letting an absolute word (always, never, all, only, inevitably) slip past because the rest of the choice sounds supported.
Scan every survivor for scope words and test them against the passage’s quantifiers. A choice can be 90% correct and still wrong because "some" in the text became "all" in the choice.
