A distinct family of GRE Reading Comprehension questions treats a short paragraph not as information to absorb but as an argument to dissect. These are the "critical reasoning" items, and they demand a different posture from ordinary reading. Instead of asking what the passage says, they ask how it reasons: "Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument?"; "The argument depends on which of the following assumptions?"; "Which of the following, if true, would be most useful to know in evaluating the argument?" To answer any of them, you must first take the argument apart.
Every argument has three structural pieces, and confusing them is the root of most errors:
Finding the conclusion first is non-negotiable. Everything else — what would strengthen it, weaken it, or must be assumed for it — is defined relative to that conclusion. A quick tool: the conclusion often follows "therefore," "thus," "so," or "clearly," while premises often follow "because," "since," or "given that." But signal words can be absent, so the surer test is the because test: X is the conclusion and Y a premise if "X because Y" reads naturally and "Y because X" does not.
The GRE prizes assumptions because they are invisible until you look. Consider: "The new tutoring program works: students who attended it scored higher on the final exam than those who did not." The conclusion is that the program works (i.e., caused the higher scores). The premise is the score gap. The assumption — unstated but essential — is that the attendees were not already stronger students who would have scored higher anyway. If that assumption fails, the argument collapses. Every strengthen/weaken question is really a question about the assumption: to weaken, attack the assumption; to strengthen, protect it.
A reliable way to surface an assumption is the negation test. Negate a candidate assumption; if the argument falls apart, that candidate was a real assumption. "The attendees were not already stronger students" — negate it to "the attendees were already stronger students," and the argument crumbles. The negation test is to assumption questions what the substitution test is to vocabulary: a mechanical check that removes guesswork.
The three action verbs correspond to three moves on the assumption:

For weaken questions, the strongest answers usually supply an alternative explanation for the evidence (some other cause of the higher scores) or show the premise does not generalize. For strengthen, the best answers frequently rule out an alternative the skeptic would raise. For evaluate, look for the choice framed as a question or an unknown whose two possible answers push the argument in opposite directions — that is the information "most useful to know."
The phrase if true is doing real work. It tells you to accept the new statement as fact and ask only what it does to the argument — not whether it is realistic. Do not reject a weaken answer because it seems unlikely; the frame grants it. Your only job is directional: does this new fact push toward or away from the conclusion, and how hard?
Two guardrails keep you honest. First, scope: the answer must engage the argument’s exact conclusion, not a neighboring topic. An argument about this program’s effect on these students is not weakened by a fact about a different program elsewhere. Second, direction: a classic trap is the reverse-direction answer — a beautifully written statement that strengthens when the stem asked you to weaken. Reread the stem before you commit.
Win these questions in a fixed order: find the conclusion, identify the premises, name the unstated assumption, then read the stem to learn which direction you are pushing. For weaken, break the assumption or supply a rival cause; for strengthen, defend the assumption or close off an alternative; for evaluate, find the question whose answer would flip the argument. Accept every "if true" statement as given, police scope and direction ruthlessly, and the elegant distractors — out of scope, reverse direction, half-relevant — sort themselves out.

Since the lanes were added downtown last year, bicycle injuries there have fallen by a third, and merchants report that slower traffic has actually increased foot traffic to their shops. Mistaking a premise or a supporting detail for the conclusion, then evaluating the wrong claim.
Find the conclusion first with the "X because Y" test: X is the conclusion if "X because Y" reads naturally and the reverse does not. Strengthen, weaken, and assumption are all defined relative to that conclusion.
Choosing a reverse-direction answer — a statement that strengthens the argument when the stem asked you to weaken it (or vice versa).
Reread the stem immediately before committing and label your target: "I need to make the conclusion LESS likely." A well-written choice that pushes the wrong way is the single most common trap.
Rejecting an "if true" answer because it seems unrealistic or unlikely to happen.
The frame "if true" grants the statement as fact. Your only job is directional — what would this fact DO to the argument — never whether it is probable. Judge effect, not plausibility.
Picking an out-of-scope answer that is true and interesting but does not engage this argument’s exact conclusion.
Demand that the answer touch the specific conclusion — this program, these students, this claim. A fact about a different case, or a different measure entirely, cannot strengthen or weaken the argument in front of you.
