Rhetorical synthesis is the most distinctive question type on the Reading and Writing section. Instead of a passage, you get a short set of bulleted notes — a student's research facts — followed by a sentence that states a goal. Your job is to choose the answer that uses the notes to accomplish that specific goal. The trap is that nearly every choice is factually accurate and pulled straight from the bullets. Correctness of fact is not what is being tested; fulfilling the stated task is.
Because the four choices all recycle true information, you cannot answer by asking "Is this true?" — they are basically all true. You have to ask "Does this do the job the prompt describes?" That single change in the question you ask yourself is the entire skill.
If you read the bullets first, every fact feels equally important and every choice looks fine, because they are all drawn from those same bullets. Reading the goal first gives your eyes a job: you scan the notes hunting only for the piece the goal needs. Consider a common trap. A goal says "present the main finding of the study," and the choices include the number of participants, the method used, the baseline measurement, and the after-result. All four are true and all four come from the notes. Only the after-result is the finding; the rest are setup. Without the goal in mind first, you have no way to tell the finding apart from the scaffolding around it.

Turn the goal into a checklist: the answer must (a) name both Elena and Marco and (b) point to something that contrasts their methods. Now test choices. "Elena Ruiz fires her pots in a wood-burning kiln built in 1890" is true but names only Elena and draws no contrast — it fails both boxes. "Both Elena and Marco Ruiz are ceramicists from the same family" names both but stresses a similarity, the opposite of the goal. "Marco Ruiz fires his pots in an electric kiln" is true but names only Marco. "While Elena fires her pots in a wood-burning kiln, her cousin Marco uses an electric one" names both and sets their methods against each other — it passes both boxes. That last choice wins not because it is more true than the others, but because it is the only one that does the job.

Notice how much of the work is deciding what not to reward. The wrong answers are engineered to be tempting: they are true, they are relevant, and they often sound more detailed or more impressive than the right one. A choice packed with specific numbers can still be wrong if the goal asked for a general introduction, and a broad, plain sentence can be right if that is exactly the introduction the goal wanted. Difficulty rises when the correct answer must combine two pieces of the notes — a problem and its solution, or a cause and its effect — while a distractor offers only one half and dares you to accept it.
Every time you meet one of these, silently narrate: "The goal is ___, so the winner has to ___." Then run each choice through that filter and drop anything that does a different job, no matter how true it is. Truth is the floor here, not the test. The choice that survives the checklist is your answer.

Notes: (1) Anna Vale used long exposures, so subjects sat still for minutes. (2) Her portraits look soft and dreamlike. (3) Theo Sand used a fast process that froze motion. (4) His street scenes catch people mid-step. Goal: emphasize a difference between the two photographers’ techniques.
Notes: (1) Bioluminescence is the production of light by living organisms. (2) It occurs in fireflies, some fungi, and many deep-sea fish. (3) The light comes from luciferin reacting with oxygen. (4) In anglerfish, symbiotic bacteria create the glow. Goal: introduce bioluminescence to readers unfamiliar with it.
Notes: (1) A study followed 300 commuters who switched from driving to cycling. (2) Researchers tracked their resting heart rates for a year. (3) Before the switch, the average resting heart rate was 74 bpm. (4) After a year of cycling, it had fallen to 66 bpm. Goal: present the study’s main finding.
Notes: (1) For decades, restorers could not clean the fresco without dissolving its pigments. (2) Solvents strong enough to lift the grime also stripped the paint. (3) A new gel releases cleaning agents slowly and in a controlled way. (4) With the gel, a team removed a century of soot while leaving the pigments intact. Goal: emphasize that the new gel overcame a problem that had long frustrated restorers.
Picking the choice with the most true facts or the most impressive-sounding detail.
Almost every choice is true. Reward the one that performs the exact task the goal names, even if it is plainer.
Reading the bulleted notes before the goal, so every choice looks equally acceptable.
Read the goal first and turn it into a checklist. Then scan the notes only for the piece that checklist needs.
Choosing a similarity when the goal wanted a difference, or vice versa.
Underline the task word ("similarity" vs. "difference") and confirm the choice points that exact direction.
Selecting a choice that names only one subject when the goal compares or contrasts two.
